Essentially porous, concrete parking decks absorb water, which migrates through the top of the slab through the bottom. leaving chloride deposits underneath, commonly called "efflourescence". Long term exposure to moisture can eventually cause the reinforcing steel in the slab to corrode, causing the concrete to spall.

To prevent moisture from migrating through the slab, the top surface is shotblasted the achieve profile and remove contamintes, and then coated with typically a three coat urethane coating system.
